"What percent of X is Y?" is the inverse of the standard percentage calculation. Instead of finding a portion of a whole, you're finding the ratio between two known values and expressing it as a percentage. This question appears in grading, budgeting, data analysis, and any situation where you need to express a part-to-whole relationship.
The formula
Y is the part — the number you're measuring. X is the whole — the reference or total. Dividing the part by the whole gives a decimal, and multiplying by 100 converts it to a percentage. If Y is smaller than X, the result is under 100%. If Y equals X, it's exactly 100%. If Y is larger than X, it exceeds 100%.
Worked examples
- Exam score: You got 42 out of 50 questions right. What percent? (42 ÷ 50) × 100 = 84%.
- Budget spending: You spent $350 of a $2,000 budget. What percent used? (350 ÷ 2000) × 100 = 17.5%.
- Task completion: 7 of 20 tasks are done. What percent complete? (7 ÷ 20) × 100 = 35%.
- Over-performance: A salesperson hit $130K against a $100K target. (130,000 ÷ 100,000) × 100 = 130% of their target.
