Frequently asked questions.
How do I calculate a tip?
Tip = Bill Amount × (Tip % ÷ 100). A 20% tip on a $50 bill = $50 × 0.20 = $10.
What is a standard tip percentage?
In the US, 15–20% is standard for restaurants. 10% is acceptable for minimal service; 25%+ for exceptional service. Bars typically receive $1–2 per drink.
How do I split a bill with tip between multiple people?
Total per person = (Bill + Tip) ÷ Number of people. Our calculator handles this split automatically.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Tipping on the pre-tax (subtotal) amount is the traditional approach, though many people tip on the total for simplicity. Either is acceptable.
What is the tip on a $100 bill at 18%?
$100 × 0.18 = $18 tip. Total = $118.
How do I calculate tip quickly in my head?
For 10%: move the decimal left one place ($50 → $5). For 20%: double the 10% amount ($5 × 2 = $10). For 15%: add 10% and half of 10%.
